Camcorder Battery - Never Cut Recordings Short Again
by Allen Donaldson
Few things are more annoying than recording a friend or family member in a once in a lifetime moment only to see the dreaded "low battery" display right before it turns off and that moment is lost to time forever. For that reason buying an additional camcorder battery and keeping it charged up makes sense if you are a high end user, and there are several options available to give you the best battery for the best price.
A battery is essentially a container that converts electrical energy into electrical energy. The batteries used in hand-held electronics are typically lithium-ion batteries, which are favored for their lack of weight and ability to be recharged rather quickly (a camcorder battery of the current generation can be charged in as little as 10 minutes). Lithium-batteries also don't suffer from the memory effect, which causes batteries to "forget" their maximum load. However, they also have the drawback of having a relatively poor shelf life and a danger of explosion or fire if kept at consistently high temperatures. Also, if traveling be certain that you are updated on the rules for storing batteries with checked-on luggage. Although they have been loosened, you still should be aware of restrictions regarding their storage.
A camcorder battery can cost anywhere from $20 to $70 depending upon the model of camcorder, the type of battery, and battery life. They can usually be found at local electronic/camera shops or online. Those who do minimal recording may think of this as an over expenditure. However, even the least used batteries can encounter some drain during inactive times. Purchasing at least one additional battery would be recommended for even the most casual of users.
Before buying any battery the battery number should be matched up with the model of camcorder it is powering. If the manual is not available then this information can often be found by visiting the camcorder manufacturer's website. In addition, generic batteries should say what models they fit into. As with any purchase, make sure you understand the return/refund policy if the battery doesn't happen to work or, worse, causes damage to your camcorder.
When it comes to keeping the camera going during an extended recording, nothing helps quite like a camcorder battery. They are lightweight and rechargeable. Though they are not considered "cheap", they are an invaluable investment for people who don't want the end of the battery to be the end of recording.
