Kent, the South East of England - Put it in Your Travel Diary

by Richard Palm

If you have got time out of a busy schedule in London, consider a Travel plan to Kent in the Southeast Of England. Head down to Canterbury and visit Canterbury Cathedral where Thomas Becket was murdered on the alter, by the knights of the jealous king. The cathedral is an astonishing piece of Christian history. The medieval archway leading into the Cathedrals grounds is breathtaking and you will not see anything like it anywhere else.

Visit Kings School, one of the oldest in the world dating from 597AD and still used to this day by about 800 pupils. Other places to see are the St Martins Church, the ruins of St Augustines Abbey and the ruins of Canterbury Castle and the Old Synagogue.

Your next Travel destination should be Chartwell, the home of Sir Winston Churchill, located two miles South of Westerham. Sir Winston and his wife Clementine bought the house in 1922 and they lived there until Sir Winston's death in 1965. The property is now owned by the National Trust and it opens daily to the public at certain times in the year. Inside you can visit Sir Winston's Study where there are some VE day strategy maps. On display are numerous cigar boxes given to Sir Winston from prominent people around the world. Various rooms are available for public viewing including the Churchill's bedroom which boasts a semi barrelled ceiling and the beautiful dining room surrounded by windows overlooking the grounds.

For a glimpse of a typical English garden, Travel to Sissinghurst Castle, where you will be delighted by the most beautiful display of flowers. The gardens were created in 1930 by Vita Sackville West, a poet and garden writer. The site of the castle and grounds is ancient and a manor house was built there in the middle ages. Today Sissinghurst is owned by the national trust and there are some ambitious plans to restore a form of traditional Wealden Agriculture.

Kent is a great place for some Travel plans and there is a lot more to see.
