Model Truck Detailing Tips And Tricks

Have you just found the model truck that you have been wanting for awhile? Once you got it home and opened it do you find yourself wondering if you would like to add some extra detailing to it? You must first decide how much extra effort you want to put into it. Some of the model trucks come painted a generic overall color which can require that it be painted if you wish to add the extra time and money into it. The manufacturers do this in an effort to keep model prices down so more people can afford them. So, let's examine a few of the different choices you will be able to make.
The first choice you will have to make is as to whether or not you wish to paint your vehicle. If you do then you need to decide whether or not you will want to prime the surfaces to be painted. Primer will allow the paint to stick to the plastic parts a good deal more easily. While primer is not required it can help. You must then decide whether or not to paint the parts before hand or after the truck has been assembled. If you are dealing with a good deal of detail then you should consider painting the parts before hand. This will make handling afterwards much easier. If you want a much quicker method and are not dealing with small details then you can paint your truck after it has been assembled.
The next thing to think about is whether or not you wish to add working parts to your model. If your model truck has not come equipped with working doors or hoods then you might consider these an option. To make these alterations then you will first need to make sure that you have a quality cutting tool on hand. A tool of choice is the hobby knife. It usually comes with several different blades for different cutting options. This will soon become a favored tool as it will allow you to get into a lot of tight spots to do specialized cutting. You should also ensure that you can easily see the parts that you are working with. A magnifying lamp would be the best choice for this particular issue. It is much better to see what you are working on. Now, if you want to cut the doors then make sure that you do so carefully. You will lose a bit of material but not too much so.
Once you have them cut out then you should ensure that they go back flush. If they do not quite fit up then you can take a bit more material off with a bit of fine grit sandpaper. Now that you have them off you should figure out how best to reattach them. To do this you might consider using a small paper clip. With a bit of bending and clipping you will soon have a working door hinge. Once you have the hinges ready you can then be ready to add them back. If you will then be painting them you should think about whether or not you want to paint the pieces. If you do then you can do this either before or after assembly.
There are many different little shortcuts and tricks that you can use to make your model truck look exactly like you want. All it will take is a bit of ingenuity.
