A Kenworth Trucks Overview

by Jim McCormack

The Kirkland Washington based Kenworth Truck Company is a leading supplier of medium and heavy-duty trucks to the North American and Australian markets. Kenworth currently operates manufacturing facilities in Chillicothe, Ohio and Seattle and Renton, Washington. Kenworth also operates a manufacturing plant in Ste-Therese, Quebec, and an assembly facility in Victoria, Australia.

Kenworth was formed in 1923 by Harry Kent and Edgar Worthington. The Kenworth name was arrived at by combining several letters from each of the founders' last names. The main headquarters of the newly formed Kenworth Truck Company was located in Seattle, Washington, and has remained there through the present day. The company was purchased by the PACCAR Company in 1944, and continued on as a wholly owned subsidiary until 1958, when it became a division of PACCAR.

Over the years, Kenworth has built a reputation for producing a long line of high-quality, durable models; while also introducing a number of innovations to the trucking market. The company produced the first Cab-Over-Engine model in 1957 and later went on to revolutionize the trucking industry with the introduction of the aerodynamic T600A in 1985. Driver comfort was also taken into consideration with the larger Aerodyne Sleeper, first introduced in the late 1970's and the even roomier Studio Sleeper introduced in 1993.

Kenworth currently manufactures 10 models for both over-the-rood and off-road applications. The T660 and T2000 models are both heavy-duty, class 8 conventional trucks that feature aerodynamic styling, higher fuel efficiency and are EPA SmartWay Certified. The T800 and W900 are both class 8 conventional models that offer a more traditional style. Both are available as day-cab or sleeper equipped versions.

The T470 and T440 models bridge the gap between heavy-duty and medium-duty trucks. Each is available as a class 8 or class 7, depending on rated weight capacities, and drive-train combinations. The T370 and T270 models are true medium-duty trucks; the T370 is a class 7, while the T270 is a class 6 truck. Both feature aerodynamic styling and a wide variety of power-trains and transmissions.

Other models include the heavy-duty class 8+ C500, intended primarily for off-road, heavy construction work, and the light-duty, class 5 T170 model. Kenworth has ceased production of its K100 Cab-over for the North American market.
